June 2012
Issue 31

On the way to the forum the other day .... I could never figure out how customers would call and ask for new straps that got lost at the dealership. Now I know.

I took my Moto in for some headlight work, I said headlight work. When I came back to retrieve my Moto they had removed my tankbag and saddlebags. Now I may be able to rationalize the tankbag being removed even though I saw no reason to get under or near the tank to work on the headlights but my saddlebags?

I got on the bike and rode back to our shop and just happen to look down and see that they had tied my nice beautiful straps attached to a nice solid cam buckle into a KNOT! Unbelievable that they did that but also unbelievable the service dept. did not say "hey!" we removed your saddlebags and tankbag maybe you should make sure they are secured correctly.

Wouldn'tya think?

Anyway my apologies to all you lost strap folks. I guess it’s like socks; the dryer just seems to eat them and the dealers service department seems to eat tankbag straps.

This month we'll talk about, why we do the things we do, are GPS's out and smartphones in?, IF "IN" how do you control data usage? How do you weather proof your device?, How do you use your device with gloves on? Also we will discuss NEW RKA products coming down the line, NEW aftermarket products RKA is selling, and more.

Letters to the Editor

Last month we tooted our horn a little with customer comments and this month I had to just add this customer letter. It really makes the day nicer when you see this first thing in the morning.

Meant to send you a note sooner, but things happened (as they always do). The bags arrived the day before I was leaving for the trip, but I had already decided to fly instead of ride because it was over the Memorial Day weekend. I just got back last night (made a side trip to my old hometown that I left 51 years ago and never went back until now), and today was nuts. Calm now, so I can write.

The bags are gorgeous....absolutely perfect.....and I'll put them to use with a 4 day trip down the Oregon coast in July.

I really appreciate you getting them to me sooner than expected. Had I known you were going to do that, I would have told you to not bother since I had changed my travel plans.

Hope things have calmed down in your new office/shop.

Kathy and I have finally got to do a little riding together!

So on Friday June 1st we visited A&S BMW of Roseville 10:30 to 12:30 and then Cycle Specialties in Modesto from 2:30 to 4:30. Then we spent ALL DAY Saturday with Al at BMW of Fresno on the 2nd.

Then on Saturday the 23rd of June I am going to do an Iron Butt
Saddle Sore 1000 riding from home in Windsor to Avon Colorado 1131 miles. Tentatively leaving around midnight Saturday morning and arriving at the Christie Lodge in Avon some time that evening about 18 to 20 hours.

Then I will be in Avon for the MSTA rally from the 24th to 27th

We need to hold our cards close to our chest this year so no MOA or RA.

On July 22nd we will take the rig down to "The Junction" and spend some time with our friends at "City Bike Magazine" and all the Bay area folk

GPS or Smartphone.

Remember the first GPS units? FANTASTIC weren't they? Well maybe they are on the way out. And the Smartphone is on the way in!

As mentioned below I will be doing my seminar in Avon at the MSTA rally.

Right now I will just touch on the changing technology here and at Avon, but there is so much happening it will be July or August before I can really put my next report together. But it will be a whooper! There may even be a special edition “Newsletter” on this subject!

Take the time to read the PDF files here on “Tracking your data” and “Waterproof your phone”.

I am on the verge of dropping my Garmin Zumo 665 for my new “Samsung Note” smartphone. Using the “NOTE” for phone, music, navigation, and weather maps!

On our ride to visit dealers mentioned in this newsletter I tested my NOTE using an OTTER DEFENDOR case and cradle, (which you can now purchase from RKA) along with my Adaptiv TPX radar unit and the SENA headsets and SENA SR10 Adapter using their “Multipoint Paring” feature.

So remove the Zumo from the mix, replace it with a Smartphone, add the SENA SR10 adapter and this is what we had going on.

1. Bike to Bike FULL DUPLEX “Bluetooth” conversation with Kathy with the tap of the “Jog Button”
2. Music IN STEREO direct from phone to headset.
3. Navigation using Sygic navigation. (Or Co-Pilot, Google navigation apps for Smartphones, or Motion X if you use a iPhone).
4. An almost real time weather radar map overlay using “a weather app”
5. Incoming radar audio via the SR10 Bluetooth adapter AND the TPX’s visual alert positioned on my dash.
6. We wanted to test the SENA’s bike to bike Bluetooth system, so we just un-plugged our Motorola FRS radios from the SR10. If we would have used those for bike to bike it would have increased our range by a couple of miles!

The best part is it’s all really reasonably priced and very functional and usable for that price!

RKA’s pricing is right in line with anyone out there and you also get all this cool testing and using the product information, so … please purchase your communications products from RKA.

Your guys call our guys and we’ll do lunch.

Next Month stay tuned

In Avon I will be doing a updated seminar on my presentation of "Bluetooth technology and communications". This seminar will be passed along in next month's Newsletter in a shortened version.

Here is just enough information to get you thinking.

RKA sells J&M as our premier communications systems wired or Bluetooth.

RKA has decided to drop Cardo Scala rider in favor of SENA has our secondary line of Bluetooth choices

I will report on SENA's updates of what they call "Multipoint pairing" allowing you to connect to devices like never before. And also updates on the SENA SR10 and our road tests Kathy and I conducted the first of June.

I also will present an interesting movie that was made accidently while testing cameras for my "Saddlesore 1000" ride. I will title it "The rainy ride from Mommy's house".

On that note I am planning on documenting my ride to Avon and this willl be presented in the July issue. It will cover things like preparation, getting the bike ready, what to take, Gear to wear, night riding, fueling the Moto and fueling yourself and much more.
